
Medication Aide Certification Renewal
Medication Aide Training is a comprehensive course designed to prepare Nurse Aides and
students for the administration of medications under the supervision and guidance stipulated by
Texas Health and Human Services to residents in Nursing facilities, Intermediate care facilities
for individuals with intellectual disabilities or related conditions, correctional institutions and
assisted living (personal care) facilities.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English
- Must be free of communicable diseases and in suitable health
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Must be listed as a Certified Nurse Aide in active status in Texas OR
- Be a non-licensed direct care staff with 90 days’ employment in the past year in a licensed facility
TRAINING HOURS:
- 100 hours of classroom instruction
- 20 hours of return skills lab
- 10 hours of clinical observation and demonstration
- 10 hours of return lab practice
- Total: 140 hours

- Partial Payment Option: $200 minimum

- Days: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
- Time: 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm (Zoom sessions)
- Class recordings available by 9:00 pm the same day

MEDICATION AIDE CONTINUING EDUCATION SEMINAR
For the purpose of maintaining and enhancing the competency of permitted Medication Aides to
administer medications as specified in 40 TAC Chapter 95, Medication Aide, it is imperative
for the Medication Aide to complete a SEVEN-HOUR CONTINUING EDUCATION training
approved by HHSC before the expiration of the permit in order to renew the license. This is not
required for the first renewal. The seven hours must be completed before a renewal notice is sent
to HHSC.
To be issued a certificate of completion, participants must satisfy all course requirements and
assignments as determined by the instructor.
SEMINAR PURPOSE:
- To protect the health and welfare of facility residents
- To maintain and enhance the competency of the permitted Medication Aides to administer medications as specified at 40 TAC Chapter 95.
MAJOR CONTENT TOPICS:
While the continuing education topics would be centered around the HHSC Medication
curriculum, GCNC would assess the learning needs by getting inputs from students and graduate
Medication Aides, employers and residents to include but not limited to:
- Role of Medication Aide in comprehensive drug management
- Communication skills for Medication Aide
- New health care policies
- New clinical practice guidelines
